Hotel jobs

Hotel jobs in Amsterdam: housekeeping and dishwashing

Preparing rooms for new guests or keeping the kitchen running. This is what hotel work looks like, whether English is enough and how you start.

Short answer

Hotel jobs in Amsterdam are possible without experience. Most jobs are in housekeeping as a room attendant and in the kitchen as a dishwasher. English is often the working language, so Dutch is usually not required. You earn at least the statutory minimum wage, often with extra pay for evening and weekend work.

Hotel jobs in Amsterdam: which jobs are there?

Hotel jobs in Amsterdam are not only at the reception desk. Most of the work happens behind the scenes. Rooms must be cleaned every day, the kitchen must keep running and guests want to eat and drink. Through Praktica you mainly work in these jobs:

JobWhat you doHours
Room attendant (housekeeping)Clean and prepare hotel rooms and corridorsMainly daytime, also weekends
DishwasherDishes, pans, keeping the kitchen cleanAround breakfast, lunch and dinner, often until late
All-round catering at SchipholServing, bar, food counter and clearingShifts, early and late

You earn at least the statutory minimum wage. From 1 July 2026 this is € 14.99 gross per hour if you are 21 or older. Never less. The exact wage is in each vacancy.

Housekeeping: your day as a room attendant

A housekeeping job in a hotel usually means working as a room attendant. You make sure a room looks perfect when the next guest arrives.

A typical day

  1. You start in the morning. The supervisor gives you a list of rooms.
  2. You fill your trolley with clean bed linen, towels, soap and cleaning products.
  3. In each room you strip and make the bed, clean the bathroom, vacuum, dust and restock products.
  4. A departure room is cleaned thoroughly. A room where the guest stays is often a shorter round.
  5. The supervisor checks your rooms. At the end of your shift you tidy your trolley.

How many rooms per day?

This differs a lot per hotel and per room size. At the start you need more time; after a few weeks you know the order and work faster. Always ask at the start how many rooms are expected of you.

Work clothes

Hotels often give you a uniform. You usually bring closed, sturdy shoes yourself. Housekeeping is physical work: you walk and bend all day.

Dishwasher jobs in Amsterdam hotels

A dishwasher job is one of the easiest ways to start in a hotel. You make sure the cooks always have clean pans, plates and cutlery. This is what you do:

  • load and unload the dishwasher with plates, glasses and cutlery;
  • wash pans, trays and large items by hand;
  • put everything back in the right place;
  • keep floors, work surfaces and the washing area clean;
  • separate and take out the waste.

It is busy around breakfast and after dinner. Shifts often last until late in the evening. You work with hot water and cleaning products, so you get instructions about working safely. You hardly talk with guests, so little Dutch or English is needed. Good dishwashers can sometimes grow into a kitchen assistant job.

Hotel work in English and without experience

Hotel work in English is common in Amsterdam. Guests come from all over the world and so do colleagues. If you speak little Dutch, a hotel is a good place to start. You must understand instructions and safety rules, in Dutch or English. For jobs with a lot of guest contact, such as serving, good English is often more important than Dutch.

For housekeeping and dishwashing, hotels do not ask for a diploma. What they find important:

  • you are on time and keep your agreements;
  • you work carefully and pay attention to detail;
  • you can handle physical work and a fast pace;
  • you are friendly to guests you meet in the corridor;
  • you have the right to work in the Netherlands: a valid passport or ID card from an EU or EEA country or Switzerland, or a residence permit that allows work.

Pay and busy seasons in Amsterdam hotels

Pay in hotel jobs depends on the collective agreement at the hotel or cleaning company. If the hotel employs the staff itself, the hospitality collective agreement often applies. Many hotels outsource housekeeping to a cleaning company; then the cleaning collective agreement applies, which has a separate part for hotels.

Through Praktica you are employed by us and work under the NBBU collective agreement for temporary workers. Since 1 January 2026 this includes equivalent pay: your pay must be at least equivalent to that of permanent staff in the same job where you work. Your wage and extra pay are in your contract. Our guide uitzendwerk uitgelegd explains more (in Dutch).

Busy seasons

Demand for room attendants and dishwashers often rises in spring and summer, around the December holidays and during big events in the city. In busy periods you can often work many hours; in quiet months hours can go down. Tell us if you need steady hours, then we can look at combining with other work.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work in an Amsterdam hotel without speaking Dutch?

Often yes. In many Amsterdam hotels English is the working language. For housekeeping and dishwashing little language is needed, but you must understand instructions and safety rules in Dutch or English. Tell us which languages you speak when you apply.

How much does a room attendant earn?

At least the statutory minimum wage: € 14.99 gross per hour from 1 July 2026 if you are 21 or older. With experience your wage can rise, depending on the collective agreement at the hotel or cleaning company. Weekend, holiday and evening work often gives extra pay. The exact wage is in the vacancy.

Can I work in housekeeping without experience?
